Print brief research and planning

Front cover

2) Note down the design elements you notice in each front cover example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work (e.g. camera shots, page design or cover lines).

  • Key star(s) are the main part of the magazine
  • Clear and recognisable title
  • Mixture of shot types - long shots and close ups
  • Relatively plain backgrounds to keep focus on the stars
  • Main and punchy cover line

3) What key conventions can you find across different types of front cover - e.g. title placement, cover lines, main flash or cover line, date/price/barcode etc.

  • All titles are placed at the top of the page
  • Main flash is placed at the bottom and across the picture
  • Barcode and price is along the side or in a corner
  • Date is placed below the title usually on the right

Inside page feature

2) Note down the design elements you notice in each inside page feature example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work

  • Many of the pictures are spread across the double page
  • Pull quotes
  • Cut out images
  • Captions

3) What key conventions can you find across different types of inside page feature - e.g. headline, subheading, main image etc.

  • Bold headline
  • Drop letter
  • 1 main image
  • Smaller images placed within the text

Planning and sketching

1) Plan the content and cover lines for your front cover:
  • Title (must be NEW original TV listings magazine you have invented): Screen Time
  • Slogan: All things TV & Streaming in one place
  • Cover image: Girl lost in the forest
  • Main cover story/main flash: Now on Netflix: 'Without a Trace'
  • Additional cover lines: Reviews from newspapers
  • Additional two smaller images: Cutouts of people in the corner - from other shows contained in the magazine
  • Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: black, green and darker colours which are cohesive with the colours in the main image

2) Plan the images you will use for the front cover - use CLAMPS. One main image and two smaller images required to meet the minimum content in the brief.

  • Main image: Girl in the forest looking behind her from a low angle
  • Smaller images: Cut out of a man in a suit with sunglasses and cut out of two people arguing

3) Plan the content for your inside page feature:
  • Subject of feature: Interview style with the main cast member
  • Headline: All new gripping crime drama
  • Subheading: With twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat
  • Main image: Main cast member in the interview
  • Smaller images (need minimum of four across the three pages): Behind the scenes shots of the cast
  • Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: Cohesive with front cover

4) Write the copy (words) you will use for the inside page feature - headline, subheading, article text.

Q1: How did you find working with a younger cast member?
Q2: How did you feel seeing yourself on the big screen?
Q3: What sort of person would enjoy this show?
Q4: What were the challenges about bringing the script to life?
Q5: What do you love/hate about the character?
Q6: Do you relate to your character?
Q7: Is it easier to be yourself on screen?
Q8: What do you like about this series?
Q9: How did you get into acting?
Q10: Who do you look up to?

5) Plan the social media content you will include in your print work to create opportunities for digital convergence e.g. hashtags, social media details etc.

Due to the target audience I think the social media platform TikTok is where I would encourage the audience to share videos using #WAT #WithoutaTrace

6) Research and select the font or typography you will use for your print work. This is a critical element of your print work - the brief requires a consistent house style running through all of your pages.

I would like to use some red and black throughout the front cover and double page spread due to this being the 'crime drama' edition of my magazine.

7) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover design and scan it/upload a picture to your blog.
