Mise-en-scene blog tasks

Still image from 'Dynasty' (series on Netflix)

Costume
In order to match the event they are attending all the characters visible in this image are wearing formal wear. The main character in this is purposefully dressed in a white dress in order to bring more attention to the blood seeping through. This effectively makes this wound a focal point of the image.

Lighting
The use of low-key lighting blurs out the background and what is going on around the main female character. This emphasises how she may be feeling during this moment as everything feels as though it is in 'slow motion.' By using this lighting it gives us a better view of her facial expression and doesn't distract the audience from anything else.

Actor
Understandably, the audience can tell how she is worried but she is directing her face towards the man holding her head. Therefore, without even watching what is happening you can tell that she trusts him. The overhead shot shows us the reality of the scene and possibly brining the audience closer to how it may feel to be in this situation.

Make-up
The wound looks quite realistic and by adding the staining around it adds to the realism. This also brings more attention to it as it begins to spread over the dress.

Props
I'm not sure if the confetti would be classed as a prop, but it is scattered all over the floor and over the main female character. Specifically around the wound to again bring more attention to this.

Setting
This shot is clearly taken on the floor of a party. Due to what people are wearing at the confetti surrounding them.

Elvis (trouble scene)

Maleficent (curse scene)

Costume
The main character in Maleficent is dressed in all black this signifies that she is seen as the villainous character. She also has horns on her head to illustrate the fantasy element of this movie and how she differs to everyone else in the room. In the film Elvis, he is the only one dressed in all black too, but for a different reason. I think it is show how he is the star of the show. However, a shirt and tie is not his usual wear when he is on stage, so by wearing this outfit and then continuing to sing like he used to it shows how he is rebelling and defying.

Lighting
In Maleficent there is low-key lighting and lots of shadows, in fact at the very beginning of the scene you can see candles being blown out at she enters. There is a brighter light on her since she is the focus of this scene. This differs to Elvis as there are lights surrounding him that are actually visible in the shots. This also shows how he is a big star and is obviously performing on stage. There are some shots of him from behind and a silhouette is created through the use of backlights

Actor
Maleficent is placed front and centre of the crowd to show her importance and possibly how people fear her. Elvis is also placed front and centre of the stage. He is above everyone in the crowd too which could show how he is the focal point.

Make-up
In Maleficent, they have used a lot of contour in order to show her cheekbones in an alien creature way. However, Elvis has a small amount of eyeliner on which adds to the realism of the character and probably just some normal stage makeup in order to make sure he glows when under the stage lights.

Props
Maleficent carries her sceptre with her raven on top. The connotations of the two collate to make us believe she is the one who holds the power in the room instead of the actual king and queen. Elvis has his guitar and mic which is a usual thing to have when on stage.

Setting
Maleficent is in an unusual place for her which makes the audience already predict that she is out for revenge or about to cause trouble. This differs from Elvis as he feels at home on stage and is usually where we see him in the film.
